What Is Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT)? A Guide for South Bay Athletes

If you train hard but keep running into the same tight hip, cranky lower back, knee pain, or shoulder that never feels right, you're not alone. I see it all the time with athletes and active adults in Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, and across the South Bay. Often the problem isn't effort. It's how well certain muscles are contributing to your movement.

What is MAT?

Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) is a way of assessing how your muscles are working. After stress, overuse, injury, or years of repeating the same movements, some muscles stop contributing as efficiently as they should. Other muscles and joints then pick up the slack. Over time, that compensation can show up as tightness, limited motion, or a body that doesn't move the way it used to.

MAT uses step-by-step assessment to find where your body isn't sharing the work well. From there, we focus on those area and follow up with training that helps you use the improved movement.

What a session looks like

First, we talk about your goals, your lifestyle and your injury history. Second, we assess how you move and test how your specific muscle respond. Third, we work on stimulate on the area that aren't contributing. Finally, we build a plan with strength training, movement patterns, and recovery tailored to you.

Who it's for

Golfers, surfers, beach valleyball, tennis, cyclists, and other competitive and recreational athletes, along with active adults who want to move better and train without working around the same problem areas.

How it fits with training

I'm a performance coach with a kinesiology degree, an RTS credential, and over 20 years of hands on client experience. MAT is the assessment piece. From there we build tailored resistance training and, when it helps, nutrition support.
